Pull trailers, move crowds, haul gear. introductionthe yukon xl is gmc's version of the chevy suburban. It's a well-equipped vehicle and a good choice for families of six or more. It's a good choice for families who find themselves needing three rows of seats on a daily basis. Even when fully loaded with people, there's space left over for large amounts of gear. where the yukon xl really comes into its own, however, is when heavy-duty towing is needed. A standard yukon xl 2wd 1500 model is rated to tow trailers of up to 8,400 pounds. A yukon xl 2500, the heavy-duty model, is rated to pull a 12,000-pound trailer. This makes the yukon xl an excellent choice for families with boats or horses. though identical in many respects, there are differences between the suburban and the yukon xl. Styling cues distinguish the gmc from the chevrolet. revisions for 2003 brought improved brakes, smarter airbags, a modernized electrical system, and improved interior features. For 2004, the yukon xl is better and safer still. It comes with a tire-pressure monitor and a seatbelt reminder for the driver and front-seat passenger. The heavy-duty 2500 2wd 39,460) and 2500 4wd 42,160) are rated to pull trailers up to 12,000 pounds. A 6. 0-liter v8 comes standard on denali and 2500 models. An 8. 1-liter v8 850) is optional for 2500 models, and delivers 440 pounds-feet of torque for maximum towing capability. The top of the line is the yukon xl denali, which is a 1500. the base sle model is a well-equipped vehicle. It comes with cloth upholstery, manual dual-zone air conditioning, anti-lock brakes (abs), self-leveling suspension, cd stereo with eight speakers, power windows, power door locks, fog lights, tinted glass, heated outside mirrors, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and alarm. Three rows of seats are standard. Denali is distinguished by unique exterior design cues. walkaroundthe gmc yukon xl is a long-wheelbase version of the yukon, just as the suburban is a long-wheelbase version of the chevy tahoe. Xl means extra long: yukon xl is based on the same platform as the yukon, but it's stretched 14 inches in wheelbase and about 20 inches overall. While the yukon can carry a lot of people or a lot of cargo, the yukon xl can do both at the same time. Gmc takes a more sophisticated, more understated approach to design than chevrolet. Still, the yukon xl shares the unmistakable profile of the 'burb. denali trades the standard yukon xl's black grille for a bright mask of fine-metal mesh, but then swaps the base model's chrome bumpers for body-color bumpers, keeping the overall flash level about equal. Round fog lights are neatly tunneled into the lower part of denali's unique front bumper. The liftgate comes standard and features a glass section that opens independently. Cargo doors work better for work vehicles as they open wide and allow a closer working position to the vehicle's storage area. Cargo doors are also useful when pulling trailers because they will usually clear the trailer tongue jack. The hinges can be released, allowing the doors to open fully when loading large items. Most people find the liftgate preferable, however. They are the leaders when it comes to seating and cargo capacity (discounting the ford excursion, which is being discontinued). Big inside, the yukon xl is very roomy and, for the most part, comfortable. the exception is the seats. Gm's bucket seats are big and cushy, but i don't always find them comfortable. The seat bottoms lack support, especially on the sides, and the seat bottoms don't seem long enough. Owners often disagree with this assessment, however. Bucket seats are standard on slt and denali models an optional on the sle. The standard front seat setup in yukon xl is a three-passenger, manually reclining 40/20/40 split bench with dual manual lumbar support and six-way power for the driver. They are similar in terms of comfort. Yukon xl comes standard with nice custom cloth upholstery. The optional ultrasoft leather makes this big truck look and feel like a luxury vehicle. the bucket seats are separated by a deep center console that holds lots of stuff. The top of the console lid features a nice rubber-lined indention, handy for sunglasses and other items. It would be even better if the rubber was an insert that could be removed for cleaning. It would be better still if the top of the console wasn't angled forward: lay a clipboard there and it'll slide off. ergonomics are otherwise excellent. The cup holders are superb, a good feature for people who live and work in their vehicles. Above are well-designed map lights that can be aimed. A covered power outlet is conveniently located for cell phones and radar detectors, in addition to the cigar lighter inside the ashtray compartment. the driver information center was redesigned last year, and is now located immediately in front of the driver, below the speedometer. It's handy and easy to use, allowing the driver to program automatic locking and other features, as well as providing trip mileage, fuel economy and other data. Turn those features off, turn them on, or deploy them partially. Everything is programmable. audio and climate control systems are well designed and easy to operate. The heating and air conditioning systems were redesigned for 2003 to deliver faster warm-ups and cool-downs than before. The manual heating controls that come on the base model (sle) are nicely designed and work well. Much better, however, are the digital three-zone climate controls that come on the other models. They are sophisticated yet easy to operate, and permit separate adjustments for driver and passenger. The rear heating/air conditioning controls are mounted overhead and help improve comfort for pets as well as people. a new tire-pressure monitoring system added for 2004 continuously checks inflation pressures and flashes a warning on the instrument cluster should any tire lose air pressure. (subtract 1500-2500 pounds if the yukon is fully loaded with people and cargo.) with its long wheelbase and full-size truck construction, the yukon xl is a stable platform for towing while offering the interior cargo advantages and three-row seating of a full-size suv. yukon xl is gmc's version of the chevrolet suburban. As the xl suggests, the yukon xl is extra-long, 20 inches longer than the standard-length yukon. Like the suburban, the yukon xl seats seven to nine people, depending on configuration. While many vehicles will seat seven, few have so much room left over for cargo (three sedan trunks of space). yukon xl denali is a luxurious model that compares well to the cadillac escalade esv. Denali comes equipped with a larger engine and automatic rear load-leveling (both shared with the escalade). inside is a comfortable cabin. We found the optional leather seats comfortable. The driver sits way up high for a commanding view of the road, and the pedals power-adjust to fit short and tall drivers. The instruments and gauges are among best in class, elegantly clean yet very functional. Interior small items storage is intelligently designed and all over, including a huge center console. second-row passengers will find a lot of leg room in the yukon xl. Heated bucket seats with a center console between them are available for the second row, turning them into first-class accommodations; and there is a power folding option, making it easier for third-row passengers to climb by. Gm's 5. 3-liter vortec v8 is the standard choice and makes 320 horsepower and 335 pound-feet of torque. We enjoyed its smooth power. The 5. 3-liter gets an epa-estimated 15/21 miles per gallon city/highway, with 2wd or 4wd. Flex-fuel versions of the 5. 3-liter v8 are available that can run on e85 ethanol, though use of less-efficient ethanol drops fuel economy significantly. yukon xl denali boasts a 403-hp 6. 2-liter v8. Denali is offered with two-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the latter an excellent aid for inclement weather but not designed for serious off-road use. Denali comes standard with the autoride active electronic suspension, which is optional on the regular yukon xl. Denali models get an epa-rated 14/18 mpg with 2wd and 13/18 with awd. Doors close with a reassuring thud. wheels change visual perceptions of the yukon xl. The standard aluminum wheel is a nice piece for look and function. Dealers offer a host of dress-up items, including wheels up to 22-inches. The standard 17-inch wheels offer the best ride quality due to tires with tall sidewalls. Ride quality gets harsher as wheel diameters increase. the rear window opens separately, which is convenient for loading lighter bags and cargo. The larger liftgate is aluminum and balanced, upgradeable to power for those accustomed to a push-button world. Roof racks can carry unwieldy items that aren't too heavy, but be sure to load with the hatch open or af.

Turn off the highway and it handles gravel, rugged two-tracks, mud and snow. In any kind of driving, it's a great choice for someone who needs real carrying capacity. safety is enhanced by a tire-pressure monitor and sophisticated hydroboost brakes. Stabilitrak electronic stability control is now available on all models, as is onstar, upgraded for 2005 with enhanced hands-free capabilities. It looks like a shortened version of the yukon xl, which looks like a fancy suburban, which is what it is. Yukon's arched roofline provides extra headroom for the second- and third-row seats. denali is distinguished from other yukons by its aftermarket-inspired chrome grille, projector-beam headlamps, body-color bumpers, round fog lights, unique side cladding, 17-inch chromed wheels, and chromed exhaust tips. for 2005, all yukons come with a station wagon-style rear hatch that lifts up to open. The rear window can be opened separately for quick loading or unloading of smaller items. less noticeable changes for 2005 include an extended front air dam with fewer unneeded openings, and more aerodynamically friendly running boards. interiorthe yukon is comfortable and convenient. Getting inside is easy, thanks to pull-out style door handles. Step-in height is reasonable, making it relatively easy to climb into the driver's seat. the denali's leather upholstery looks and feels nice, and the shoulder harnesses fit well and are easy to wear because they are mounted on the seats. We sometimes had trouble getting comfortable in the big, cushy bucket seats, but owners seem to like them. Visibility out of the yukon is very good, thanks to large windows. second-row seating is roomy and comfortable. The bucket seats offer excellent support and can be adjusted individually. They almost feel more comfortable than the front seats. yukon's optional third-row seat provides space for adults' feet. It isn't a lot of space, but it is there. The third row folds, flips, slides and removes easily. Like most third rows, it's best for kids or occasional use. Getting into and out of that third-row seat isn't easy for adults. Climate controls and audio controls are easy to use yet are quite sophisticated in their operation. We enjoyed the denali's bose nine-speaker stereo with subwoofer. Rather than embedding the antenna in a window for fashion reasons, the yukon uses an external antenna for improved radio reception. the panasonic dvd passenger entertainment system 1,295) includes a seven-inch flip-down screen for second-seat passengers, plus two sets of wireless (infrared) headphones with independent volume control, a wireless remote control and three sets of auxiliary video and audio inputs. Gm's onstar security and information service works well as a navigation system because there's nothing to program. Press the button and a human operator responds, to provide directions and other assistance. The latest gen 6 version provides enhanced hands-free, voice-recognition capabilities, and more intuitive continuous digit dialing. safety starts with seat belts and is enhanced by dual-stage frontal airbags. Side-impact airbags are optional 350) on sle and slt, standard on denali. It even rides with impressive smoothness on bumpy rural byways that make some other suvs feel like pogo sticks. On smooth highways, the yukon cruises effortlessly. Handling is impressive and surefooted for a full-size suv. Yukon is stable at high speed. It's much easier to park then the longer yukon xl, but it's still a full-size truck and not as maneuverable as a mid-size suv such as the gmc envoy or ford explorer. the yukon is definitely a truck. It comes with a live rear axle supported by coil springs and located by five control links, an arrangement which provides a good compromise between ride/handling and cargo-carrying utility. Its front suspension is conventional in design, but uses torsion bars instead of coil springs to save. The xl stands for extra long. Though the same width, the yukon xl is about 20 inches longer than the yukon; it's the same length as its near twin, the chevy suburban, measuring 18 1/2 feet. the suburban and yukon xl are familiar vehicles on the road. They share styling but differ in some details. For example, the yukon xl has a cleaner air intake below the bumper than the suburban, a different shape for the headlights, and the grille is not split. while very large in size, the yukon xl looks smooth, if not sleek. It isn't edgy like the cadillac escalade is. There's not a lot of flashy chrome and the side moldings and door handles are body colored. the running boards are integrated and unobtrusive, extending no farther than necessary, with a black grippy coating. The tinted glass behind the c-pillar is expansive, and looks nice. The front end has a clean appearance, with beefy block-like headlamps over a front bumper fascia. All the panel tolerances are a tight fit. It's nice to see that gm can produce this kind of quality. the rear window opens separately, which is convenient. The liftgate is aluminum, however, which makes opening and closing it manually a bit easier. interiorthe yukon xl is comfortable for long tows or major outings. It's a wonderful feeling to drive down the highway in one of these, riding high with all the comforts, including the optional bose sound system. The seats are comfortable and easy to adjust. Like most large suvs, the front row has plenty of head and leg room. the instrument panel and center stack are elegant and worthy of a higher-end vehicle. The denali model is richer still, with a wood and leather-wrapped steering wheel and darker wood trim than the other models. we found the touch-screen radio/navigation system easy to use, much easier to operate than in so many cars, mercedes, for example. We set the radio stations we liked and could quickly switch from favorite xm to am to fm stations with the push of a single button; many vehicles require switching bands, then switching stations. This ease of operation makes daily driving more enjoyable. the switchgear is simple, and the instrumentation is clean. The console is huge, with a deep storage box and a tray on top. The glovebox is large. Two cupholders are provided in a removable tray forward of the console and they work very well. There's another cupholder in each door pocket. A slot in the dash just left of the turn signal is perfect for coins or toll-road tickets. The pedals are adjustable, to accommodate short and tall drivers with the press of a button. the rearview camera is useful and improves safety, so we strongly recommend this option. This makes parallel parking much faster and much easier, and it helps when maneuvering in parking structures and other tight locations. The camera works well at night, benefiting from the reverse lights: one night we had to back up a narrow winding driveway squeezed by trees, and it could only be done by using the monitor.
